Life time resident and true cowboy, Robert Holmes, of Pickens, rode into Heaven to be with the Lord eternally, Friday, February 8th, at his residence. Robert Holmes, 87, was born the son of Elige and Clare Boone Holmes on February 21, 1925 at Pickens, Oklahoma. Robert and Dixie Hardaway were united in marriage, December 8, 1983 and had a happy, inviting home. They were always together no matter where, working in the garden or penning cattle, or just enjoying the day looking out across the hills from the front porch. Robert was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and had retired from the Dierks and Weyerhaeuser companies and was a member of the KCASPE. Robert loved ranching and farming. Having a good horse and a good dog was life?s contentment to him and anyone who shared his opinion about owning a good horse and a good dog were his buddies. He was the first rancher to herd white Brahma cattle (bremers) in the area and believed in getting an early start on the day. Some say they could hear him calling cows from miles away at the crack of dawn; he considered it a "sin to be in bed after sunrise." He spent countless hours riding the hills, hog hunting and seeing after his cows. Robert enjoyed having kids around and delighted in having them stay over. He and Dixie had opened their home and their hearts to many boys through the years, helping them to get a fix on life and learn something about an honest days work. Robert loved his family and all the get- togethers they shared. All who knew him can truly say they?ve learned something from him and will miss him greatly.
