Olen L. Hill Sr., 92, of Broken Bow, OK, passed away Friday, December 13, 2013 at McCurtain Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow. Olen was born March 9, 1921 in Pickens, OK to Earl and Lucille Hill and was raised by his aunt, Gillie Davenport. Olen proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was inducted on November 21, 1942 and was a Staff Sergeant when he was honorably discharged on July 6, 1945. He received numerous commendations: the Bronze Star with two oak leaf clusters for valor, Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman?s Badge, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three star clusters, WWII Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Olen was a First Scout for the 104th Infantry "Timberwolf" Division, which was commanded by General Terry Allen. As a scout he spent more time behind German lines than he did with his unit. Olen married Betty Jean Wakefield on July 2, 1943. He and Betty loved fishing, hunting and traveling in their motor home. He was the Broken Bow Fire Chief in 1941 and 1942, and was a member of the Broken Bow Jaycees in the late 50?s and early 60?s. He worked in sawmills and the forestry industry in California, Oregon and Oklahoma. Olen retired from Weyerhaeuser as a Contract Supervisor for Weyco Timberland in 1977. He received a belated High School diploma in a ceremony for veterans at the Broken Bow High School on November 9, 2001. This was a proud moment for him. He is survived by two sons, Olen Hill Jr. and wife Mary of Broken Bow; Terry Hill and wife Vera of Konowa, TX; one daughter, Gina Queen and husband Buddy of Broken Bow; sister-in-law, Louise Dean of Broken Bow; grandchildren, Olen "Trey" and Tammy Hill, Sara and Harlin Hamilton, Shane and Courtney Hill, Summer and Rodney Bray, Brooke and Chase Gambol and Rick and Tonya Harris; great-grandchildren Joseph Dillon Hill, Lucas Hamilton, Logan Hamilton, Jolie Hamilton, Xander Hill, Rodney Bray, Jr., Baylie Bray, Addison Gambol, Mace Gambol, Cody Hall, Shelby Hall, Trace Knight, Tyler Knight, Kindall Taylor, Chris Harris, DeAnna Marts, Robert Harris, Jessica Leverette; several nieces, nephews and many friends.
