Mildred Bird

–

Smithville, Oklahoma

Mildred Joyce Bird, affectionately known as Millie, peacefully passed away on Monday, June 17, 2024 at home in Smithville, Oklahoma. She was born on Friday, October 9, 1931, to Houston Franklin and Ethel Mae Simonton Bishop in Fort Worth, Texas.

Millie took pride in being the first in her family to graduate high school. As a hard worker, she tirelessly helped support her family. During her children’s early years, she was a homemaker who did little bits of everything, from taking in laundry to knitting items for sale, to help her family make ends meet. Later, she embarked on a career with the Baylor Hospital System as a Computer Operator, overseeing billing for the anesthesia department.

A devout believer in Christ, Millie exemplified the term “Bible-toting Baptist” and was a prayer warrior. She faithfully prayed for her husband and children, living out her favorite Bible verse from Psalms 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Fondly referred to as Grandma Bird by the children of her church, Millie served as a Sunday school teacher and VBS teacher every summer. She and her husband played a pivotal role in acquiring a youth van for church outings and ballgames. Additionally, they contributed significantly to the construction of the Honobia church in Honobia, Oklahoma. Millie was an active member of Trinity Baptist Church in Smithville, Oklahoma.

Millie had many hobbies; she loved to travel, to fish, was a fan of classic black-and-white movies, and loved listening to old country and bluegrass music. An avid lover of books, she was rarely seen without a book in her hand, even when she was driving. Millie was a devoted wife and mother and was a wonderful grandmother. She will be greatly missed by those who knew her.

Millie is preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband of 62 years, Harold Bird; her son, Ronald Bird; brother, Morris Bishop; sister, Ethel Elizabeth Earl, and one great-grandson, Gentry Sherrill.

She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Becky Bird of Smithville, Oklahoma, and Donald and Melvetta Bird of Watson, Oklahoma; one daughter and son-in-law, Connie and George Driever of Spiro, Oklahoma; fourteen grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friends.

Graveside services will be on Friday, June 21, 2024, at 10:00 A.M. at the Octavia Cemetery with Brother Randy Keiss officiating. No visitation is planned with arrangements entrusted to Bowser Family Funeral Home in Broken Bow, Oklahoma.
