Mac was born on September 23, 1913 to Simon J. and Geneva (Ward) McCarrell in Gilliam, AR, and was the second of eleven children. Mac grew up in McCurtain County and he was one of the hard-working CCC boys at Beaver's Bend park in the 1930s. Mac eventually moved to Oregon and to California to look for work during the Depression, where he worked in many different jobs. Before the war, he met Dorathie Shahan in Los Angeles, CA, and they were married on December 16, 1942. Mac was drafted into the Navy during World War II and served from 1944 to 1945. He served bravely aboard two ships in the Pacific, seeing combat and surviving the sinking of a ship on which he served. After the war, he and Dorathie had a daughter, Donna. When Donna's two boys came along, Mac became a proud grandparent. Mac truly loved his daughter and grandsons as they were most important to him. After retiring, Mac returned to McCurtain County where he enjoyed being close to his brothers and to his favorite fishing holes. Mac was an avid fisherman and he fished throughout his life. He had fished in the western US and in Mexico, but his favorite fishing spots were at Pine Creek Lake and at Broken Bow Lake. In 1995, Mac married Leola Ward and they were happily married for 16 years. Mac was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge. Family and friends will remember Mac for his great smile, his wonderful laugh, his calm demeanor, his faith in God, and for the love he had for his brothers and for his daughter and grandsons.
