Gearldene (Jerry) McCartney, age 81, of Broken Bow, Oklahoma passed away Sunday, June 8, 2014 at Spring Lake Assisted Living in Paris, Texas. Jerry was born July 1, 1932 in Shinewell, Oklahoma the daughter of the late Ed and Lola Mae Sullivan of Broken Bow, Oklahoma. She co-chaired the first Owa-Chito Festival at Beavers Bend, served as office coordinator for Little Dixie Community Action Agency beginning in 1972. She later became the McCurtain County coordinator for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program until her retirement in 2000. During her life in McCurtain County she received numerous awards for her outstanding volunteer service to her community including the Broken Bow Chamber of Commerce Award for outstanding service, Hidden Heroine Award for the Red River Girl Scout Council and the Health Planning Award by the State of Oklahoma Health planning commission. Her passion was helping provide services and support for the Senior Citizen population. She attended Holly Creek Missionary Baptist Church where she enjoyed bible study and found joy in serving the Lord. Jerry leaves to cherish her memory, daughter, Jackie and husband, Paul Witsaman; granddaughter, Jessica and husband Staff Sargent Tommy Gardner; sister, Juan and husband, Don Wyrick; niece, Regina and husband, Terry Martin; nephew, Lance and wife Angel Wyrick; beloved nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
