Gertrude Lewis was born December 2, 1924 at home in Broken Bow, OK to Adel and Delcia (Govan) Lewis. She was the oldest of 13 children. Gertrude was a member of Hill Chapel CME Church in Pleasant Valley Community, Broken Bow, OK, having joined in her youth. She served her church through the years as a Sunday school teacher, church pianist, church secretary, church treasurer, Stewardess, conference delegate and District Missionary President. Gertrude started school in a one-room school in Pleasant Valley community and graduated from Dunbar High School, Broken Bow, OK. She attended College at Mississippi Industrial College in Holly Springs, MS, earning her Bachelor?s Degree and teacher certification. She obtained her Master?s Degree from Bishop College in Marshall, TX. Her first teaching assignment, was to a one-room school house in Tom, OK. She also taught at Highland Lake (near Eagletown), Center Point, AR, and in Broken Bow at Dunbar and at Bennett Elementary. During her tenure she received several honors including, OEA Teacher of the Year in 1976 and Broken Bow Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year in 1985. Gertrude retired after 39 years of teaching in 1985 and was inducted into the Broken Bow Alumni Association?s Hall of Fame in 2005. Gertrude loved and took pride in her career and genuinely cared for every student. Gertrude served as president of the board for SOS for Families (women?s shelter) for many years. She was a past Matron in the Eastern Star Organization. She was a good community servant and helped many people with her time and money. When she was able Gertrude liked to paint, sew and crochet. One of her artistic talents was being able to cut out letters, free-handed, from folded pieces of paper. In more recent years she occupied her time with word search puzzles. She loved to travel. Gertrude married Martin Lewis of Eagletown on December 29, 1945 in DeQueen, AR. They had been married 51 years at the time of his death in 1997. The couple raised one of Martin?s nephews, Donell Williams and adopted a baby girl, Gerre`. Gertrude was preceded in death by both parents and 9 siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Gerre` Lewis-Wright, Broken Bow, OK; granddaughter, Rayna Alexis Wright, Broken Bow, OK; one brother, Rev. Garland Lewis, Kansas City, MO; two sisters, Anna Faye Lewis-Norris, Kansas City, MO and Ruth Gwendolyn Lewis-McPowell, Broken Bow, OK and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
